Fight or flight?

I'm playing my first game through, and it seems like I've reached a point where it doesn't make sense to fight pirates unless it's a part of the story. I'm getting around 200,000 for defeating the pirates, but it seems they are doing two and three times that in damage to my ship. Let alone the cost of replacing cannons and the ammo I use.

Does a point come where it doesn't make sense to fight, or am I doing something wrong? Should I maybe to into battle with like 50 of each chain ammo and firepots and just unload like crazy? What do other folks do?

I have found that by constantly using firepot (about 30) per pirate fleet, you should be able to quickly destroy the whole fleet while causing minimal damage to your ship. As firepots are so cheap it is a quick and easy way to destroy them.

I haven't gotten quite that far yet, but fleeing only does damage to your ship. It's far better to flee than to sink, but if you've gotten far enough along to have at least *some* supply of ammo, haul off and fight 'em.

Unless my ship is badly beat'n up, I'll fight the suckers! Arrrrg. And yes I always carry a large load of fire pots. ;)
