The British Summer is firmly on its way now, which means the Astraware office will be getting rather warm for a few months. It's a very pleasant temperature outside at the moment, but when the sun is shining into our room full of computers, the temperature in the office starts to soar.

It gets a bit too much for most of us, so we go all out to try and keep the office cool. One of the best ways we have of doing that is Howard's ingenious scheme to block out the sun! Myself and Paul from the QA team get the lucky job of putting up the shielding, which is a shiny silver insulating material. We cut it into strips and fasten it to the windows, shiny side facing out, and we reflect lots of the sunshine away from the office.

We had a practice run last summer, so we've become quite nifty at putting the shielding up now. However, some of the developers still look a little bit worried when we start climbing over their desks.

We're not worried, we're just bidding farewell to the outside world for another few months! :p

I guess there are some benefits to being ill and working from home, I can actually see through my window, and enjoy the pretty scenery (when I'm waiting for a build, obviously!) :)

Are your masters too cheap to purchase an air-cooling machine?

We have three in the office, but it's not enough to cope with the heat coming through the huge windows... Still, with luck we'll be able to move to an office which has at least some level of air con, and hopefully reasonably sized (and not south-facing) windows!

Never mind that - Katherine's at home sick, and yet she's still working? Hope Howard emails you some chicken soup or something, Katherine...

I wondered too, but never thought about too many windows. Thanks for the explanation.

Trust me, during the Summer in this office nobody has mixed feelings about wanting to be somewhere else :)

(Well, except maybe Priscilla, who always seems to be wearing a jumper  )

They only unchained me from the desk and let me go home cos my coughing was interrupting people ;)

Glad to say, I'm mostly better now and back at work :)

Well, I'm relieved that you're better - purely from a "you're better" point of view, and nothing to do with you working on a game :)

Now, if I was in your position with regard to the coughing, being the evil-minded swine that I am, I'd make a ringtone of coughing for my cellphone, and then play it periodically :D

(I've messed with people's heads with cellphones before: Back in the mid-1990s, before polyphonic ringtones, I once brought an electronic game to work and fooled a guy - twice! - into thinking his phone was ringing ;) )
