I got my money not by trading, but by using a huge navy, and being a pirate. I was a pure bounty hunter. ALL my cargo space was used for guns. Any ships will do, but when you max out your navy size, start replacing your smallest ships with bigger ones, and immediately load the new ships with guns. Nevermind trading. If you are a trader, later inthe game, you cannot hope to have enough firepower to deal with large pirate fleets, and still have enough cargo space to be worth while. If you simply plunder everyone, you can make immense ammounts of money FAST, and the cost for repairs/replacement ships is minimal compared to the profits you make. It's pretty easy, but you have to be very careful early on by trading close to home to earn enough money to get a naval force that you can start hunting with, but if you can handle yourself early on, you'll never have to flee again!
