syria can't get rug moved

I am in Syria and I have tried everything to get the rug man to move the rug...spoke to youg by, petted cat, spoke to Duane, then his wife then went updairs and rug man will not respond....I have been working on this for 3 days...obviously consulted the walkthrough which i rarely do because I was going in circles...any suggestions would be appreciated.

have you spoken to the guy near the rug and given him something in your inventory which you got at the motel?

finally figured out the sequence....it sure took a long time thanks for your reply. I am sure I will run into other problems along the way!
