View Full Version : Installing the installer?

I had no problems in doing so. However, I would like to know why you guys, as well as certain other developers are going with this method of installation. I don't know about all the other users here, nor the devs who "package" the game for those users, but so far, I preferred the old method of installing apps. A zip file where you can directly hotsync the content's files onto your handheld or exp card. Or one could directly transfer it there yourself via Card Export or card reader.

The things I have against this are:
>if you install the installer by putting it directly onto exp card, you have to go through the motions of tapping on it in the launcher screen, deleting the un-needed installer in exp card, then manually moving the game file(s) to exp card since there doesn't seem to be a way to tell the installer to install to exp card

>If you Hotsync it, it appears the installer automatically runs on the handheld after syncing is done. There's still doesn't seem to be a way to have the installer install on exp card.

If someone would like to chime in on what I'm doing wrong here, or reasons why the new installer method is favored, don't spare the details.

I experienced this as well. And later on, when I was browsing my device using FileZ, I noticed that the Installer was left there, occupying about 100kb of memory space. I thought it was supposed to delete itself after installation?

I also don't like the installer. It seems to have caused major problems with ZLauncher on my Treo 600. After installing the latest version of Sudoku, it put ZLauncher into an infinite reset loop--whenever I tried to use it, it would say it was "backing up" Sudoku and then reset.

I ended up having to uninstall ZLauncher and reinstall (and then reset up all my preferences, tabs, etc.).

As this is the first Palm program (I think) that's used one of these installers, I hope it's just a fluke with this installation. I'd hate to have to go through this each time I want to install or upgrade anything that uses the new-style installer!

Did anyone else have a problem installing the latest version of Sudoku with ZLauncher, or was what happened just a fluke?

[Edit] Just tried out Sudoku and discovered that it was the old version. I don't think the new one even installed after all I went through! I'll try installing it again and hopefully it won't mess it all up again.

I feel a bit silly replying to myself, but I figured out what the problem was. I'd moved Sudoku back to the card (since you have to do that with ZLauncher for "old style" Palm programs when upgrading, or else you get the new version in RAM and the old one on your card) but hadn't hotsynched separately before trying to install the new Sudoku. So I think ZLauncher got "confused" that the old one wasn't there and was constantly trying to back it up.

It's still a pain in the butt to get ZLauncher set up again, but I'll know from now on to hotsynch before trying to install anything else if I move programs from the card.

so your plan in the future is to install the installer through hotsync after moving the previous version of the game onto the card?

No, other way around. I keep most programs on my card (using ZLauncher's shortcuts instead of installing them directly there), so I will move it from the card, hotsync, then install the new one, hotsync, and then move it back to the card.

A bit roundabout, I know, but I haven't figured out a better way to do it yet.

The installer drove me crazy this weekend. I installed 1.30 over the last version and up popped the devil. Oops I mean the installer. Keep installing a version in my amin memory instead of the card. This is the first time I have used the installer for any program on my PALM. Hope it's the last.

Do not like it at all. Wound up deleting the program and starting from scratch. Of course, this erased the extra puzzles I had downloaded. Redownloaded them again OK.

The game is fantastic! Have not found a bug or problem at all using my PALM Tungsten C. Think I have played about a zillion puzzles or so my wife tells me.

Love game
Hate installer
