Trying to make something new look old

How do I make the new item the cat helps me get look like an old item? I have the rough textured item from the restroom but can’t figure out how to combine the two to make new look old. I stack them visually in my inventory but the action button does nothing. George doesn‘t even shrug. HELP! Please.
