Stuck in Syria

I seem to be stuck in Syria - I've gotten the key (and towel & chain) and the statuette, but I can't seem to do anything with them, and can't get to Bull's Head.

Are some of the actions in Syria leading up to this state order dependent, or am I missing something more basic?

you need to modify something and sell it...to pay for the trip to bulls head..

I am in Syria and for some reason the carpet dealer is not giving me the option of showing him my matchbook. I have talked to Nejo, Duane and Pearl completely, but the rug dealer just acknowledges me and goes no further. I try to show him the matchbook in my inventory and George shrugs. I do not know if it is important, but I have already been to Spain, am I out of order and missing something?

Try showing him the match book when you see the Talk Icon, I might have to go back and check if he doesn't have a Talk Icon Show it to him when he has a Magnifying Glass on him....

I know what I have to modify, but I can't figure out how. Is there something I do when initially picking it up, or does the modification happen after it is picked up?

You need to combine the item with another item in you inventory. Some you could rub it with maybe?

To combine an item, scroll through the list to find it, press the up arrow on screen and then scroll to the other item, then tap on the first item to combine it with the second.

How to combine things was the missing piece for me. I had tried playing with the inventory much earlier in the game, but then it appeared to just rearrange the order. Thanks for the help.

No problem at all. You'll need to combine some other items later in the game too.
