Would it be possible to add some sort of filtering option to the pencil marks so that I can focus on the marks for a specific number. That would make spotting patterns a lot easier in harder puzzles where there can be a quite lot of candidates for each cell.

Cracking idea - this would make it so much easier to spot X-Wings and Swordfish, as well as hidden singles of course :)
Have to think carefully about the interface though... I will discuss with Larry.

For the time being, u can use the freehand drawing tool already available to circle and make other marks to help u distingiush specific spots of interest.

Thanks Howard, if Larry needs an example of what this option could look like, Andrew Gregory uses it in his Soduko program:

This version also implements the colouring of cells that was discussed elsewhere on this forum.

The advantage of filtering would be that it unclutters the board. Adding freehand drawings would make it even more of a mess (at least with my drawing skills).
I hope I don't insult the developer who poured his very lifeblood into implementing this option, but so far I've found absolutely no use for it.

Quite true - we're looking at the filtering for a later release :) I reckon it would be fantastic for assisting with finding X-Wings and Swordfish.

Ah, I'm sure she won't be insulted ;) :D
We don't expect all users to use all features - we try to make the essential features easy to access and use, and the optional ones, well, optional!
As for finding a use for it - I too thought it was just an interesting curiosity until I started solving puzzles with Forcing Chains. I don't think I could manage them so easily without the notepad! (See my description in the technique writeup "tip" section for how I use the notepad.)
Hope this helps!
Howard.
