I thought so!
In my area I'm the only 1 too with a dreamcast.
But a lot like the games on it.
Virtual Tennis 2k2
NBA 2k2
Soul Caliber
Sonic
Shenmue
etc.
But you don't like it I see...

That game is just the best.
It can take you away for hours!
But eej, don't you think it is a waste they stopped making games for it!
I know not many people have an DC or ever heard of an DC, but is just a real good console!

They stopped maing games for it because X-Box, PS2, and Gamecube have completly blown it off the market (I hate Gamecube, but there are a couple of good games...jut a couple). I have never played a DC, but I have seen one and have heard of one.

But before the Xbox etc. where around, it was already terminated!
It was/is better as the playstation 1 and N64!
It has been released at the same time as those 2, but that did't happen.

Hi guys, finally got some time to post on the board (taken a while but I'm hoping it'll be a more frquent occurence).
Hope this little bit of info will help, as you already know Dreamcast had a 6 month window in Japan on the PS2 but the demise of the machine wasn't as simple as just the success of the PS2.
Sega did a great job in anticipating what Sony were going to pull out of the tech deptartment and kitted it with some impressive hardware. They managed to get a 200mhz Hitachi SP4 processor (ok it was 94 mhz slower than the Sony CPU but it still matched it for mips at 380) and a superb Videologic PowerVR 2 gfx chip (many on the board won't remember when the UK based Videologic were the ONLY competitor for 3DFX.. and if Dreamcast had done well they might still be in the race...but alas some things are not to be..). Not to mention a very expensive proprietry 1.2 gb EnhancedCD system (designed to avoid the nasty pirates out there) but enough of the tech, why did they kill the system so early you ask...
Sega representatives pointed out, the system just didn't sell well enough and there was little chance the company could hope to compete with two more systems set to be released the following year. Sega would continue to lose money on Dreamcast consoles that were far more expensive to manufacture than they were to buy. Continuing down this unviable path much longer could have put even more of the company at risk.
When people decry "but it was such a good system," a point gets lost. What made the system so good were the games, namely Sega games, that could only be played on the Dreamcast. The talent behind those games didn't go anywhere -- Yu Suzuki, Sonic Team, and Visual Concepts are still around (albeit under a newly restructured naming convention) and there's no reason to expect they will produce anything less than their usual high-quality products. The only difference is that you'll be playing them on a different system including handhelds.
At the end of the day it was a purely economic decision, and yes it was sad to see one of the best hardware manufacturers in videogame history give up the fight (especially to 2 new kids on the block...Sony and Microsoft), but then again at least we all still get to play Sonic, Shinobi and their ilk on our Palms and Pocket PC's... so anyone out there with a DC keep it safe, don't let your friends, little brothers or sisters or in fact anyone damage it, as you never know what it will be worth one day (I still have a mint condition Vectrex ...ooops showing my age... that at last check was worth about $600), and be safe in the knowledge that you have a machine that heralded the dawn of 21st century videogaming...and don't let anyone tell you any different.
Sorry for going on a bit but I hope it helps :-)
Don't just Play More... Live More

I have a Dev Kit, GD-Writer HKT-04, 19 blank GD-R's, some games, some software like 3 copies of Windows CE Toolkit 2.1, 1 copy of Windows CE Toolkit 2.0, Sega Developer Technical Support Release 8 and 9, Windows CE Toolkit 1.1, and Dreamcast System disc Disc 2 S-3260 and S-3656. If anyone is interested in purchasing these items, PM me at and make me an offer. I can also take pics and send them to show you the condition of the product. If anything, I will put these items on e-bay

sorta: http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/dreamcast/
I've been reading info on the new consoles coming out (on digg.com) and so many people keep saying how wonderful their Dreamcast is compared to even the announced PS3s and Xbox360s and Revolutions.
What I don't get is they keep bringing out new consoles which leaves the games companies trying to keep up with the latest machines and leaving behind their old ones which could still do with some more good games. Rather than bringing out the biggest leetest piece of machinery, they should be supporting their current ones with more games and such.
So the reason for me sticking with my pc. Apart from new mobo, cpu and graphics card I don't have to buy a new system every few years.

It's a nice machine, except it matches my Tapwave Zodiac for CPU and VRAM. I'm surprised at how little I have heard about it. :)

Windows CE is different than Windows, I dont think there is any way Win2000 would run on a dcast, due to the architecture difference between the RISC in the Dreamcast and the X86 archicture that normal windows runs on.
Windows CE was written for RISC machines (pocket pc's mostly). I was suprised to see it in a console when Dreamcast first came out ...
I still have my original dreamcast, and several games. I was upset that Sega got out of the hardware market, but I am pleased that they still develop games. It is a bit wierd playing Sonic on the X-Box though ...

Hey, I know this thread is old, but I picked up a Dreamcast Dev Kit a few months ago. It's missing it's case cover (looks just like the picture that was posted on page 1 of this thread), harddrive and external GD-rom burner. =(
I've been trying to find a copy of the dev kit disks, or maybe someone who wouldn't mind making an image of the harddrive so I could put it on another harddrive.
Any chance you still have your dev kit RX?
At worse, i guess, i could use a copy of the linux they got working for dreamcast, and put it on a harddrive. Just not sure how the devkit boots up. I found a place locally that has a keyboard ($15), and i recently picked up a game for it (so i can try it out.
