My high score on the internet pc version is 873,580. But I haven\'t gotten anywhere near that in the pocket pc.
What kind of scores are other people getting?

What strategies can you recommend?
Thanks!

Here\'s a few suggestions:
Always try to use the bonus tiles (gold and green).
Don\'t just scramble the tiles when you don\'t readily see a word. It just gives you more red tiles which are bad ;). Try different letter combinations. Trust me, you will learn some words you never knew existed (like qua).
Even if you have to sacrifice bonus tiles, you have to get rid of those red tiles as quickly as you can-especially in the later rounds. Otherwise they will overwhelm you.
Choiberg... :D my current high score is 274300 :P ;)
Cheryl
Mar 4, 2003, 03:05 PM
Oops, I forgot to add that you should try to get the bonus words in the upper right hand corner, too. The first one gets you 500 points and value increases by 500 point for each word you find :).

Oops..I posted this in the high score thread by mistake.
\"Right now i\'m in a game with a score of 500,000. I\'ve been playing it on and off for a few days (i\'m glad it saves the current game when you close it)
The best strategy is to get rid of the burning tiles as fast as you can (imo). If you can\'t , then plan ahead so you can get rid of them later on as they move towards the bottom.
Otherwise, just try to make words for as many points as you can. And try to get rid of vowels that get bunched up together so you don\'t have to use scramble that often. It\'s killer later on in the game.\"
Anyways...i\'ve been playing on with the same game and am now at 1,000,000 and will continue with that game the next time I am at this computer (next week).
Some ranks
Level 25 - Lexographer 1st class
Level 26 - Dictionarian (at 800,000)
Level 27 - Super Dictionarian (at 900,000)
Level 28 - Bookworm (at a million and a picture of the bookworm)
Next rating is at 1,100,000. Hopefully I can make it that far when I try it next. The hard part now, is that they are dropping more of the v\'s, qu\'s, y\'s, z\'s, w\'s, etc.

Alright...
The best strategy for bookworm at the higher levels is to make words that don\'t take just 1 letter out of a specific column. If you can always take 2 or more letters out of a column, a burning tile won\'t appear there. So if you can make a 4 letter word that takes 2 letters out of 1 column, and 2 out of another, no burning tiles will show up there. Burning tiles only get made if you are making small words, and you take only 1 letter out of a column (or a burning letter can burn down 1 block, causing another burning letter to appear above). If you just follow that, you can pretty much play the game forever.
The rest of the scores and ranks are as follows:
Level 30: Mega Bookworm (1,100,000)
Level 31: Ultra Bookworm (1,200,000)
Level 32: Bookworm Supreme (1,300,000)
Then every 200,000 points after that is the next level, but it is still a \'Bookworm Supreme\'.

My highscore for this game is 480,*** in pocketpc. it\'s take me about 5 hours. i think the more level u get, the more score u have. my technic is
1. in level 1-6, make only 4 or more (if u can) and try to avoid using yellow block.
2. in the level 9, u\'ll get sick of red army block. however, u can control the situation by having yellow or green block at top screen. it protected your entire column.
3. i really make score with yellow block in level 7-8. try as much as u can.
using my style u will have a lot of yellow block lying down on the bottom. but u know that make u get score much more.
pls share me your technics i want to be a million scorer. i thinks i am the best in my groups(Thailand). share your experience thanks
smokerfield
Apr 27, 2003, 08:35 PM
and in the level 9 up, it\'s all about strategy (i call it \"Red army project\") u have to plan before u move about 4-5 ahead. this is the important and critical point in the game. i feels that even 3 words combination in level 9 is make a lot of score. so if u have a great strategy, u are the master. i admit that i have a little scare when i enter this game. because? because i know that it\'ll take me 4-5 hrs to play without break for sure. in the present, i wont play it until i find out what is the best strategy for this game. i have the target a million. so pls provides me your technics. this is also astraware co. pls explain how to calculate your score and how to play like a master. in next version i hope u can add more word and a little translatation of the word that i made. because i aways get confuse how this word exist. thanks i love this game the most after i plays ppc games for 3 yrs at least. you are my favourite. BOOKWORM IS THE BEST!!!!

Bookworm is better than a sleeping pill for me. I play it in bed at night and just play until words make no sense; then I just put the PDA on the night stand and drift off to la-la land. This isn\'t to say Bookworm bores me -- no! When I\'m wide awake, I can play for hours. It\'s just a nice no-brainer before I sleep, too.
If I read a novel, I\'m up for hours, swept into the plot!

I have to ask...You folks scoring in the (*gulp*) millions, how long have you been playing? And how much do you play? I'm pretty comfortable consistently getting in the 200k's, but that's it!
I play on a Dell Axim. I notice that once I get up to level 8 or 9, it starts flaking out on me and I have to close and re-open the paused game. Sometimes tiles will be missing from the middle of the board, or it won't let me select a given letter, or I have little bits of various elements in different parts of the screen...Just weird stuff. Does this happen with you, too?

I've played the same game every morning for the last month for a few moments before going off to work.
Level - 10,360
Score - 2,083,638,866
Best Word - Linings @ 1,191,060 points
Longest Word - Accountants
Game went like wildfire all the way up to level 10,300 then the game started to really pound me with buring tiles, I blew up with that final score I posted above. It stops announcing level up's at 10,300 and just keeps racking up the points, but the burning tiles are created so quickly it becomes insane. I took digi-camera shots, so ill post them when I get the chance.

Well, dang! After hitting somewhere well in excess of 2,000,000,000 points in my long-standing action game, the score started ******** up and going backwards--yes BACKWARDS! Disheartened, I haven't played since. But the game is still "live" and hasn't burned yet. (Sigh!)
Like Martoune's posting said, at level 10,300 the burners reign down and the level stops going up. But, in my case, the level started ******** up as well and dropped down to 10,035 by the time I noticed it.

My high score is over 2,000,000,000. Yes,Two Billion.
I stopped playing for now because sometime after getting to 2.something billion the scores started going backwards with each word I made. The average word scores were around 900,000 pts.

Well....
by reading this post I've learned that there are two versions of Bookworm...
I'm playing the Palm version and my high score is 271K...I have posted my score on-line...(my goal is to get into the top ten...)
How in the world are the handhelp people getting beyond that...
Can they cheat and put in bogus verification numbers?
What are some of there stratigies?
Thanks.

That is an excellent score! I never look at the high score tables as I have a PPC and you cannot export high scores from PPCs. My high score is around 350,000. I think I made it to level 10 or maybe 11. No strategy that I can think of - just a lot of luck! :D

I have just crashed out after thinking I was "Mr.Never Will Be Beaten".
Achieved Bookworm Supreme 52 (Level 84) and had just entered my longest word with the best high score (Humanitarian..48,600 pts). Pressed enter and was burned. What a Wally I am. I don't think I'll be able to look at the game again for months.
Extremely addictive though.

People are cheating. I saw a website advertising the fact that you can change the bonuswords. They erase the current .txt file and change all the bonus words to something easy like "are". That needs to be fixed!

I have only seen it done on the PC but im sure there is a way on pocket.... open up from Program Files/Popcap Games/Bookworm Deluxe/bonus word dictionary.txt also wordlist.txt is viewable but unsure if its possible to add words to it. Sucks, but if a cheat is available you have to assume the top scorers are doing it.

Not wanting to boast too much, but I just got 2,400,000
Level 37 - Boomworm Supreme 5*
If you just focus on keeping the reds at bay, scrambling when it goes all vowels, and keeping your word lengths as long as possible, plus keeping a regular look at the bonus words, you can keep going for ages.

I know why bookworm scores won't get higher than about two billion ( to be precisely, 2147483647). The score is a 32-bits integer value. The largest number able to fit in a 32-bits integer with negatives is 2 ^31 - 1 (32 0's or 1's, first one for negative, and a zero value), And that's 2147483647. So the highest possible score is that. This score is unbeatable.
Oh, and it's also possible to get to a score of :-) -2147483647, and then it would go upwards again. So if you want to count a higher score, just count the number of times your score flipped. Use your math and find out!
I think that's all there is to tell about it. Oh, and most other 32-bits games also have this. But there are only a few where it is even possible to get scores or money this high.

Didn't know there was a forum for this, but googled "highest bookworm score" and found you. My husband and I play on our PC, and have gotten over one million twice. We just had a power failure and lost a game that was 1,979,??? - aproximately 21,000 away from two million! I have to check my archives in Yahoo IM, I think I told my son what it actually was. One other time we had a score of 1,336,350, level 23, I think, and our rank was "Super Dictionarian". Man, I wanted to see what our rank would have been with the game we lost power on!
I agree with other posters about keeping the reds at bay. I try to not shuffle unless it's impossible to make anything - I'll even make three-letter words and fight reds for a while if I have to. I'll try someone's suggestion about two -tiles-per-column to not get a red to drop. This latest game I was fortunate to get the bonus words more quickly. My husband noticed the score was higher at a lower level than our 1.3 million game. I've always wondered how high it would go, too. Thanks going out to DeKameelvanAli for the "32-bits integer value" explanation. And thanks for all the other tips as well.

After reading the rest of the posts, I'll point out that we play the web version, not the downloadable one. I don't think there's any way to cheat on this, is there? Heck, I don't even cheat in solitaire with real cards. Where's the fun in a real win if you cheat? I'm in my 40's so I have kids and understand "cheat codes" for their PS2, and I suppose that makes them more fun to play, but I admit I could never make it through level one of Mario Bros.! I'll stick with Bookworm!

I am currently in a game with a score of 11,560,530 as my highest score yet. As long as we don't have any power surges, I think I can manage to keep going. My best advice is to NEVER scramble the words (no matter how tempting). There are always bizarre three letter words I have never heard of in the mix!!! I just get the red tiles as soon as they appear, unless I can see a definite longer word as they fall. After a certain point, I don't even bother with the bonus words, I just try to stay alive with the craziest of tactics. Words like "huh" and "hah" and "jee" and "zee" are lifesavers. "Eau" comes in MAJOR handy, and try to use the letter "V" in as many scenarios as possible!!!

June, I am playing Bookworm Deluxe, versions 1.03. At level 70 I am at 36,500,000, so I speculate that 44,700,00 should be somewhere between level 75 and 80. So how did you come up with level 447?
Now for the guys that reached a billion or more, and one said the level was over 8,000. It takes me at least one hour to complete a level, and all the levels seem to take about the same amount of time. If it took 8,000 hours, to reach the 8,000 level, that would amount to me playing the game 8 hours a day,for 1000 days. I have a little trouble computing that you other guys could get there in a month or two. At 8 hours a day, you would have to go through about 30 levels an hour to get there in a month.
Somebody. correct me if I am wrong, or am I just using a different Bookworm game!

Presently at level 83, and just passed 64 million. I am on a PC, not a handheld gizmo. Would like to hear from anybody that has reached this point! Highest one word score is 38,000. You really do not need to know fancy long words, just fancy short words, particularly four letter words with three vowels,... and the best three letter word turns out to be "eau". The key seems to be a balanced board of vowels and consonants on each column. I could be wrong, but if you leave too many colored tiles on the board, it could become a serious problem.

I just found this topic when trying to find out what the rank titles are. And, I just felt the need to brag a little ;-)
Anyway, for the Palm, my top 5 scores are from 291,740 to 325,060. The strange thing is, I got those scores within a few months time. For the last 6 months I can't get any better than 250,000.

Passed the 100 million mark yesterday. Now at level 97. Highest word score was 49,980 for DESTAIN. Only shuffled once, and that scared me so much, that I would only do it again if I would lose on the next play without shuffling. This is only my third time of playing this game. The first time got 200,000, the next time 900,000. The people that designed this game, put extensive work into which letters are dropped in each column. All of our scores would be much lower if the game just randomly dropped any letter it wanted.

Was at level 105 when I restarted the computer, due to some computer update, while the game was active, and got the fatal error, not executable sign when it resumed. Stupid on my part. Tried everything to get back in, but nothing worked. Oh well, at least the game didn't beat me. Was fun, and may try it again. Unless a miracle happens, this will be the last time you hear from me.

After getting the "Fatal Error" that refused to go away, no matter what I did, I put the Bookworm CD in the PC and uninstalled. I figured I would have to start over, but it gave me the choice of going back to the point where I became disabled. So I got to continue. Now up to 175 million and still going. Not watching where my pointer was sitting, I accidentally reshuffled twice,(fortunatly with no red tiles at the time) losing all the colored tiles and was instantly hit with 7 or 8 red zingers. Both times it took me to the bottom row, before I could manage to get out of the mess. Now at level 116, and the minimum score on a three letter word is 3,630. However,I have gone another hundred million points without getting a higher scoring word than 49,980, which was way back at around 70 million.
I apologize to June, as I now realize that your game levels are completly different from mine.

I play the deluxe version 1.0 and usually averaged around 200,000 with occasional bursts up to around 700,000 points.
My most recent game has been the highest one yet! Usually the red tiles rain down on me and burn up my game while I watch hours of game play go up in smoke, but I've had amazing luck this time.
Level: 105
Points: 10,501,760

Just got 43567380 and topped today's Hall of Fame. Only level 74
For me the trick is to play not more than 1 hour a day....
save the yellow and blue tiles even at the expense of doing some short words resulting in burning tiles.. Get them down to the bottom and get as many of them as I can to put them together to get blue or platnum tiles. Also - they are a good saftey net for when you do get in trouble.
Don't be afraid of burning tiles. They can get rid of bundles of impossible vowels when you end up with too many U's or I's in a given area.
DUI - a word that when I get lots of U's and I's together - I make sure to save any D's and make words under that D so it goes down to the U's and I's and I can get rid of some extraneous vowels.
Mostly - it is planning. I often "save" words at the bottom and just wait for them to turn yellow to get more points.
I used to play this game at my sisters and bought it in December. It took me 1 game before this and about 6 weeks to get to this point.
Now - I have to start all over again...

Once in a great while I can get a 1.2 or 1.3 million score, but it's really hard to get the 50,000 bonus scores coming quickly. The quicker or more frequently you get the bonus words, the better your chances of getting a higher score.

Actaully my wife, not Bookworm, knocked me out. I mistakenly started this several month game using her name, and she agreed to use another name, but she forgot, and she started a new game which quickly ended mine. After being upset for several hours, I told her we would never discuss the matter again. Not even a Hall of No Fame record, except at some point I started taking digital photos at each new level, which I still have. Highes one word score was 76,000 (CUTTHROAT) Started a new game using my own name, and now up to 18 million.

I have read many people say that they scramble only when they have to. Sometimes I scramble just to mix thinkgs up, and this has kept me in the game longer than usual. I am almost at 4 million right now, which isn't the best, but isn't too shabby, either.
I feel that if I just try to make a bunch of little three letter words, I run a higher risk of a burning tile showing up somewhere that I was having a lot of trouble anyway and making it to the bottom.

You would just download it from the page where they sell it. The current Palm version is 1.15. If you click on the version number, where it is underlined on the right side of the screen, it will tell you the changes that have been made. I wouldn't change unless your husband's game is done because I think he would lose it.
Edit: Also you can post your high score through a link on that page if you haven't already. Get the export code from your device. It will only give a code for the highest finished game. I would at least get the code before installing a newer version, just in case I'm right about losing the old games. ;)

Was last February that I was at 67 million, still at the same game and now up to 695 million, at level 200, on Bookworm Deluxe version 1.03. Interesting, I have three words over 100,000 and the first one was before I hit 100 million. It remains difficult to get a word that scores more than 100 thousand points. Feel I'm about half way to getting to two billion, at which point others claim the game goes into reverse. Suppose that will take another 6 months to a year, if I don't burn out. Best word EAU.

How do I play the web version? I only have it on my handheld and i tried posting my high score but couldn't do it. I have 737,830 points as my high score on my palm. my top 5 scores gave none less than 500,000. i'm addicted to this game as well as scrabble. i want to know how people can get millions here. thanks!
