View Full Version : arggh! \"show signature\" checkbox problems

For some reason I cannot figure out, the \"Show Signature\" checkbox beneath the post new message box keeps getting cleared. I have experienced this behavior on and off for a few months, and it\'s starting to get a little annoying.
As far as I can tell all my cookies are in order. Sometimes show signature is still checked when I post my next message but more often it is not. Restarting IE and rebooting have no effect on this behavior. What am I missing? Is anyone else seeing this?

I did have something like this once before. I resolved it by removing everything concerning Astraware, cookies included, from the Temporary Internet Folder and logging on again.
Somewhere along the line I had probably done something that my computer didn\'t like...

Thanks Pritch, I will give that a try. Although I can\'t imagine what might\'ve induced this.
Doh! There it is again... when the post reply page opened for this message the show signature checkbox was clear.

OK I\'ve deleted all my cookies with \"astraware\" in \'em. Hopefully, as you say, a fresh batch will help.

How about making sure that it is checked off in your preferences. There is an option there to have the show signature box always checked or unchecked.

Threephi,
I had this same problem a couple of weeks ago, it was doing it to my email notification check box too. It resolved itself on it\'s own. I was never able to figure it out....

If you look 14 posts into the thread you will see where I brought the subject up and see some of the responses there.

BGB: This problem occurs despite the setting in user profile.
Choiberg: Thanks for the info, I\'m surprised I missed that post of yours as it describes the problem well.
I was going to post that I\'ve been having no problems since clearing my cookies as Pritch suggested. WAS, that is, because when writing this post the show signature checkbox was clear. I have an idea about it however, which just occured to me. When I write posts, I am in the habit of using the back button to review the thread, and clicking forward to write some more. Maybe this somehow clears the checkbox sometimes?

I was going to post that I\'ve been having no problems since clearing my cookies as Pritch suggested.Good - I won\'t read the rest of the post then...
...OK, I read on.
Unless this is a new procedure of yours, then it wouldn\'t even potentially be the problem - if it was ok before, nothing changed, but isn\'t ok now - then something is wrong :(
Try having two windows open to check other comments rather than going back and forth though, (Whereby going back and forth doesn\'t affect my settings).
Maybe on that occasion you had been into your profile within the \'session\' and then it didn\'t like going back?

Okay....
While all the above info is interesting that the combination of our board, the internet, and everyone\'s browsers is about as stable as a middle-eastern ceasefire, I\'m left wondering this question...
Does anybody ever want to turn the signature off ?
Because, if not, I might as well remove the option from the \'post\' page, and the \'profile\' page.
I\'m fiddling with the code for this area right now, so that\'s why I\'m asking :)
Howard.

I\'m in favor of removing that option, Had. I always show my signature.

I have figured it out, and I tried it several times to make sure I wasn\'t crazy.
Ok, how many of us, that are having or noticing this problem, mess around with their profile on a weekly basis.
Now, I have found out that if you go into your profile and DO NOT make any changes and then use the back button or close the window that the profile is open in, instead of hitting submit, it prevents the boxes from automatically being checked.
Now if you go into your Profile after you have caused this to happen and click the \"Submit\" button to exit your profile and then go back to the boards, instead of just closing the profile window or hitting \"Back\" on the browser. It will cause the check boxes to be automatically checked like your profile settings say to do.
The down and dirty, you need to always hit submit when you exit your profile regardless of wether or not you made any changes to have the checks appear in the boxes.
HAHAHAHA, I figured it out!!!!!
I truely spend toooooo much time in the boards..... ;)

Had,
Now that we know what causes this problem, are you still going to remove the option. I don\'t think you need to now, there might always be someone who may want to turn it off. :)

Ok, how many of us, that are having or noticing this problem, mess around with their profile on a weekly basis.Of course, I also made the suggestion that a profile change was involved. :P
Presumably, while playing with yourself (sorry - your profile ;) ) you also spotted that if you don\'t make any changes but exit your profile by saving, the time offset to GB time is reset?
As far as I know, this still happens, and as such whenever I go into my profile, for any reason, I always delete the time offset and reenter it, before saving. Tedious but effective :)

Does anybody ever want to turn the signature off ?I know that in the past, I have for individual posts, turned my signature off. - As a really quick answer to a comment to make it psuedo-annonymous ;) (Of course, it is not really, but the short-sharp answer was then more effective.)
As such, it is a facility that I have used - probably for the few <20 character posts. ;)

Choiberg, that\'s good detective work, but I open my profile extremely rarely, and to the best of my recollection I have always used \"submit\" to get out of my profile as I don\'t want to give anything a chance to act up.
This problem has definitely occurred at times I have not opened my profile at all (in other words I write one post and the checkbox is checked then sometime later I write another post and the checkbox is cleared). However, I just tried what you suggested (opened and submitted profile; am writing post in that same browser window) and voila the checkbox is checked.
I wouldn\'t agree that this problem is 100% figured out. But maybe this is a workaround...
Anyway, Howard, I like the option to show/hide sigs even though I personally will probably never use it. Intentionally, that is ;)

Threephi,
Sorry it wasn\'t your situation, it was just the only way I could cause it to uncheck the boxes that I was able to find. But hey, if it ever stops checking the boxes, we now know what we need to do to get the setting turned back on.
