View Full Version : Email Notifications
Howard, something really screwy is going on with this board. Instead of the email notifications being sent out quicker - like you promised they would - I\'m beginning to notice a pattern whereby many notifications do not get sent until SEVERAL HOURS later (e.g. I just got an email notification for a post that was made over 12 hours ago (!)). What is going on here?

Howdy,
I received my E-mail notice that Jan had repied to my post about three minutes after she posted. I have never had the problems that you describe MP3. I have my messages sent to my Hotmail account.

The board does now process the email requests faster, and pass them on to the SMTP daemon.
That\'s not the end of the story though. When the server is loaded, or other weird stuff is happening, outwards email is the least critical thing, and so is the first to be held. Sounds like that might have happened for you.
(Or, it might be your own email server! Who knows :) )
Howard.
Ummmmm... it may actually be my own server, since the emails were actually \"postmarked\" with the same date and time as the corresponding message was posted.
Which leads me to ask a very important question: Howard, I sent you a rather important email message last night, and yet I have received no response from you. Is it that you just haven\'t replied yet - or chosen to ignore it :( - or is something indeed screwy with my mail server and you never received the message in the first place?

I got your email message at 5.50 (or similar) am, my time. I replied at about 3pm (as soon as I was awake and sufficiently caffeinated). Sounds like your mail server is dodgy ?

Slightly off-topic, but:
Why doesn\'t the entire posted comment get put inside the email notification? This would save bandwidth - in an obscure and devious way - by taking an initial hit for the email, but getting gains back by having people read the comment off the first bandwidth hit, and not loading the main board. \'Less they want to make a comment, of course.

Well I couldn\'t tell you the bandwidth risks myself because I\'ve never maintained a website (not a good one anyway) but I like the idea of having the new message being posted in the e-mail response.
Howard:
Yes, apparently my mail server IS dodgy - though it appears to be only the POP3 server; the SMTP server seems to be okay, since OE reports (in the \"message properties\" of the message I sent) \"Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2003 00:39:43 -0500\", which works out to 5:39 your time - the message arrived 11 minutes after I sent it. That would normally be considered pretty bad, except that the POP3 delay is even worse: I still haven\'t received yor reply.
Oh well, could you please re-send it to my other address - palmmp3@yahoo.com?
Requiem and Boxcartim:
That was already discussed several months ago, over here: http://board.astraware.com/viewthread.php3?FID=17&TID=640

On the original subject of email notifications, once you post on a site, and you select to include your signature and request email notification, do you have to check those boxes every other time you post in that same thread. I have just been able to piece it all together: (I think)
>If I reply to a thread for the first time, my profile settings check both the boxes to include my signature and email notification.
>If I have already replied to a thread, every time I go back and post again, the boxes are no longer checked.
I always check the boxes every time I post. I am starting to think I don\'t have to now. Is this a correct assumption that you only have to check the boxes the first time you post in a thread and then after that it will do it for you from there after. Or is this a problem with the Board?

I *think* it works like this.
When a post is made, it searches through all previous posts in a thread. For each user who has a post in the thread already, it checks to see if any have the \"please notify\" tags set, and if so, sends them the notification. (Only one per user).
It also doesn\'t notify you when you respond to one of your own threads. (I added that exclusion later).
I could be wrong...
Howard.

It usually doesn\'t notify you about your own posts, but I have gotten maybe 10 notifications about my own posts in the last several weeks that the board was up before the big bang, and once since.
I think it\'s funny. :P

I haven\'t ever seen a notification of my own post emailed to me, that is wierd...
I have tried this, every time I repost after I have already posted in a thread, I have to check the box to put my signature in there. I haven\'t tried it with the email check box.....

How odd. I\'ve never been notified of my own posting, and the boxes are always ticked for me.

Howdy,
The boxes are always checked when I post, it does not matter what thread I post in either. I also have never received a notice of one of my own posts.

Ok,
Now for the last day, whenever I reply to posts, my boxes are both checked.... I haven\'t changed anything in my profile. But I am not complaining, just making an observation.... ;)
